This is the only surviving portion of one of Wilson's earliest school buildings, the Wilson Female Academy, which also served as a Confederate hospital during the war. Wilson's location on the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad, the principle north-south line that was linked to Virginia in Weldon by the Petersburg Railroad, made the town a good site for a hospital after the war began. On April 1, 1862, Confederate authorities seized the building for use as a general military hospital.
