The area now known as Purcell was first settled in 1837 by the Chickasaw Indians when they moved from Mississippi. In 1887, upon the arrival of the railroad, settlement began in earnest, with a great influx after the Land Run of 1889. The town was incorporated in 1898. Purcell was named for E. B. Purcell, a director of the Santa Fe Railroad from Manhattan, KS.
Purcell is the county seat of McClain County, and has a current population of about 5900. Purcell has a Mayor-City Council form of government. The town is known as The Heart of Oklahoma, and also the Quarter Horse Capital of the World.
City Hall is a one and two-story tan brick building, constructed in 1935 as a WPA project. The windows are fixed pane throughout. There is a projected entrance bay at the front, with doors on either side.
