1879: The Bell Telephone Company and Western Union reach an agreement, in which the former assents to staying out of telegraphy, and the latter to keep out of the telephone business
1889: The Eiffel Tower is inaugurated
1899: Students at the University of California, Berkeley steal the Stanford Axe from Stanford University yelling at leaders following a baseball game, thus establishing the Axe as a symbol of the rivalry between the schools.
1909: Karl Landsteiner develops a system of blood grouping.
1919: The Paris Peace Conference opens at the Palace of Versailles, France
1929: Pope Pius XI emerges from the Apostolic Palace and enters Saint Peter's Square in a huge procession witnessed by about 250,000 persons, thus ending nearly 60 years of self-imposed status by the papacy as Prisoner in the Vatican.
1939: Sweden, Norway, and Finland refuse Germany's offer of non-aggression pacts.
1949: The B-50 Superfortress Lucky Lady II under Captain James Gallagher lands in Fort Worth, Texas, after completing the first non-stop around-the-world airplane flight (it was refueled in flight 4 times).
1959: Alaska is admitted as the 49th U.S. state.
1969: John Lennon and Yoko Ono are married at Gibraltar, and proceed to their honeymoon "Bed-In" for peace in Amsterdam.
1981: President Ronald Reagan nominates the first woman, Sandra Day O'Connor, to the Supreme Court of the United States.
