SFSU was founded in 1899 as San Francisco State Normal School, a two-year teacher-training college. It was the first normal school in nation to require high school diploma for admission. Four year programs were initiated in 1930. in 1960 SF State became part of the California State College system (now CSU) and since 1974 has been known as San Francisco State University.

The university awards bachelor's degrees in 115 areas of specialization, master's degrees in 97 areas, and a doctor of education (Ed.D.) in educational leadership.
