The depicted beautiful Gothic portal decorates medieval St. Michael' chapel (kaplnka sv. Michala), located close to the St. Elizabeth Cathedral in the heart of Košice historic city centre. The portal is interesting by relief sculpture of its patron - St. Michael Archangel with sword in hand.
The St. Michael' chapel, built in the second half of the 14th century, represents the culmination of the Gothic period and is surprising by its stylish precision, intimacy and harmony. Built originally as cemetery church, it was surrounded by the city cemetery and contained an ossuary. This is why it is devoted to Archangel Michael, who is escorting souls to the other side. His statue depicting the judging of the dead souls is placed above the entrance to the chapel. The chapel was recostructed and "cleaned" from non-Gothic additions in 1903-1904 and another extensive restoration works took place in the years 1998-2006, when the chapel was re-consecrated by Košice's archbishop, Alojz Tkác.
