Evergreen Cemetery was begun in 1868, one of the first in the area. This pioneer cemetery is the burial place of soldiers who fought in the Civil War, Spanish-American War, World War I, and World War II, as well as the final resting place for many homesteaders and early pioneers of the Stevens County area.
This memorial, as well as the graves of at least four Civil War Veterans and one Spanish American War veteran are within the cemetery. The locations of most are unknown. Two, however are buried near this memorial. They are located beside the flagpole just inside the main gate, to the north. The memorial is difficult to read, but still legible with some effort.
