This is second county courthouse, built in 1838.

Current building was built in 1838. County seat was moved to Independence in 1850. This structure was then used as a private residence from 1855-1871. Used as a hotel from 1871-1911. Then as apartment building and later a hay barn. Current owners, Dr. & Mrs John P. Kapp bought building in 1988. Was remodeled and listed on NRHP in 1997. There are 8 fireplaces located in building. Architect/builder, James Toncray built courthouses in several surrounding counties, Wythe,Scott, Montgomery, Floyd and Independence. The Clerk's office is located across the street. It was built in 1810. Clerk's office has been used as Post Office, dental office and voting precinct. Currently Clerk's office is vacant. The old courthouse is being used as a private residence. Located at corner of Greenville & Justice Rd. Area was known as Greenville when courthouse was in use. Later this area was called Old Town.
