At the boundary between the cities of La Salle and Peru and along US Route 6 is this pair of population signs, each facing opposite directions.

The signs are at a bridge where Route 6 crosses a ravine. The closest intersection is Peru (sign at the location)/Chartres Street (map application) in LaSalle. The signs are by the east end of that bridge.

LaSalle is the eastern community of the two, and the sign is on the eastbound side of the road. The sign is green and reads:

"LaSalle
9700"

Peru is the western community of the two and the sign is on the westbound side of the road. The sign is also green and reads:

"Peru
10300"

Peru's sign is surrounded by other signs. Two of them proclaim state championships in volleyball for 2011 and 2012. Another is for the state championship for Jr. League baseball. There is a roughly made sign that states that Peru is also the home of three pro football players. There is another sign for J.A. Happ of the Phillies, and a state championship sign for the Senior League team in 2012.

LaSalle and Peru are river towns. They were, initially, the terminus of the Illinois and Michigan Canal, which ran parallel to the Illinois River to Chicago, then became an important port along the Illinois River when the current dams and locks on the river were built. Since about 1960, the population of Peru has been around 10,000. LaSalle reached 10000 in 1900 but has fluctuated since then. Recently, it has been slowly rising after slumping in the 1990s.
