The Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation is the canalisation of the Rivers Chelmer and Blackwater in Essex. The navigation runs for 13.75 miles (22.13 km), has 13 locks, six bridges, and drops 23 metres (75.4 feet) from Springfield Basin in Chelmsford to the sea lock at Heybridge Basin near Maldon. It was opened in 1797, and remained under the control of the original company until 2003. It is now run by Essex Waterways Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Inland Waterways Association.
This bridge, the second one up from Heybridge basin, was rebuilt and widened in 1910 by Essex County Council using cast iron balustrades between brick abutments and parapets on iron girders. The county crest appears on both sides of both balustrades at the mid-point.
The cut-mark is on the south-east parapet, 0.4m above the pavement and was last verified in 1962 as being 6.389m above Newlyn Datum.
