The Tongariro National Trout Centre, just south of Turangi beside the Tongariro River, features a museum and Hatchery sheds with underground viewing chamber. A small stream runs through the property with large trout visible in the pools. A small fish pass allows these trout to swim freely up the stream avoiding the weir. The Fish Pass is situated alongside the walking track into the Trout Centre. It is open for display purposes and features explanatory signs and illustrations. The flume contains wooden baffles providing resting areas for fish as they negotiate the Pass. Usually these Fish Passes are covered within a culvert. There is another Fish Ladder further up the Wairehu Stream but it is almost invisible through the undergrowth around the culvert.
River/Waterway: National Trout Centre stream.
