When Fort Nelson was built in 1780 Kentucky was still part of Virginia. The fort was named after Thomas Nelson, Jr., then the governor of Virginia.
Today Fort Nelson Park stands on this site. It is a small corner park plaza with many shade trees and a fountain in the center.
At the corner of the park is a plaque, commemorating the founding of the town of Louisville.
