A.L. Stanley was born the same year that the corrugated cardboard box was invented by Robert Gair, a Brooklyn printer who developed production of paper-board boxes in 1879.

1890: Hunkpapa Lakota leader Sitting Bull killed on Standing Rock Indian Reservation.
1900: Sergeant William Harvey Carney is awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in 1863, as the first African American to have been awarded this medal.
1910: George V becomes King of the United Kingdom upon the death of his father, Edward VII.
1920: Adolf Hitler presents his National Socialist program in Munich.
1930: The Mickey Mouse comic strip makes its first appearance.
1940: With the resignation of Neville Chamberlain, Winston Churchill becomes Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
1950: Eleven thieves steal more than $2 million from the Brink's armored car company headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts.
1960: Harper Lee publishes her novel To Kill a Mockingbird, which later wins the Pulitzer Prize for the best American novel of 1960.
1970: United States Postal Service workers in New York City go on strike; President Nixon assigns military units to New York City post offices. The strike lasts 2 weeks.
1980: Six United States diplomats, posing as Canadians, manage to escape from Tehran, Iran as they board a flight to Zürich, Switzerland.
1990: Robert Tappan Morris, Jr. is convicted of releasing the Morris worm.
1996: The 68th Academy Awards, hosted by Whoopi Goldberg, are held at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, California with Braveheart winning Best Picture.
