Interestingly, the Mason-Dixon line, traditional dividing line between North & South, runs through Charleston. Southern sympathizers (known as Copperheads) in the area stirred discord and rioted in 1864 leaving 9 dead. This is commemorated by a nearby waymarked Illinois historical marker.
