The North Portal for the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway is located in the Beaver March Rest Area on southbound U.S. Hwy 97 south of Chemult, Oregon. The North Portal Kiosk contains three signs with local information and a Byway map.
The Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway extends from Crater Lake N.P. in Oregon to Lassen Volcanic National Park in California covering 500 miles. The route includes a loop through the volcanic region east of Mt. Lassen and a side trip to Lava Beds N.M.
