This historical marker is fixed to a rock at the site of the French trading post on Madeline Island. It reads:
Michel Cadotte. A French Canadian trader, built a post on this site about 1792. From his wife Madeline, daughter of the Chippewa chief White Crane, the island takes its present name.
The official French Fort LaPointe was built in 1718 about 500 feet west. Its commandants were St. Pierre, Linctot, La Ronde, Marin, and Beaubassin, the last of whom retired in 1759.
