Newport Barracks were originally built by Confederate soldiers, but were captured and occupied by Union forces during the Fort Macon operations in 1862. A sharp fight here in early February 1864 resulted in a short-lived Confederate re-occupation of the area, but the Union troops were able to take back the barracks. No sign of the barracks remain today.
