1903: Orville Wright flies an aircraft with a petrol engine at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina in the first documented, successful, controlled, powered, heavier-than-air flight.
1913: The 16th Amendment to the United States Constitution is ratified, authorizing the Federal government to impose and collect income taxes.
1923: Louis Armstrong makes his first recording, "Chimes Blues," with King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band.
1933: Franklin Delano Roosevelt addresses the nation for the first time as President of the United States, in the first of his "Fireside Chats".
1943: The 15th Academy Awards ceremony is held in Los Angeles. Mrs. Miniver wins the Best Picture award.
1953: Mickey Mantle hits a 565 foot (172 m) home run at Griffith Stadium in Washington D.C. Mantle's home run is believed to be the longest home run in baseball history by many historians.

1983: The final episode of M*A*S*H is aired and the record of most watched episode is broken.
1993: The Great Blizzard of 1993 strikes the eastern U.S., bringing record snowfall and other severe weather all the way from Cuba to Quebec
