This province-funded museum opened in March 1962 to preserve and educate, and includes 4 homes respresenting different periods and lifestyles in Africa. Other portions of the musuem include a toy museum and a historical powder magazine.
The four "period" homes are the Schrueder House (built in 1707 and represents a modest pineer cottage), the Bletterman House (1770s), the Grosvenor House (circa 1803, representing a properous family) and the O.M. Bergh House (typical middle-class home of 1840-1880).
In addition to being part of this museum, all four of the homes are listed ad provincial heritage sites. Each home is completely furnished.
