David Harshaw moved to the area in 1877 to start a ranch. During his travels on the ranch he discovered the ore body that became the site of the Hermosa Mine. With the opening of the mine people were needed to run the mine. The town of Harshaw was established to support the mine. There were around 30 structures at the height of operations.
