Elk Lake occupies a bedrock basin dammed by a lava flow from Red Crater to the south. The lake is at an elevation of 4884 feet and has a surface area of 405 acres. The lake receives water from a 13 square mile drainage basin, but is primarily spring fed. There is no surface outlet.
