While seal harvesting was an important industry in the past, there is no longer a market for seal products, allowing them to multiply. This sign provides information on the history of seal harvesting and also on the life cycle and lifestyle of seals. Hout Bay is part of the Table Mountain National Park, and this harbor is part of the Karbonkelberg Restricted Zone; the area is an important breeding and nursery area for sensitive marine life.

The Cape Peninsula, of which Hout Bay is a part, is a very rich, biodiverse marine area, where the warm Atlantic current mix with the cold Benguela currents. In 2004, this "restricted zone" was created to preserve the sensitive environment. Read this sign to learn how the Cape Fur Seal fits into this scenario!
