This high welded tuff rim on the east wall of Newberry Crater above the road into Cinder Hill Campground, but requires a long steep climb of about 500 feet vertically. Newberry Crater is actually a caldera, which formed about 75,000 years ago. The welded tuff rim was formed by the caldera forming eruption. The caldera covers 17 square mile and is located at the summit of Newberry Volcano which covers 1200 square miles with flows extending about 75 miles north-south and 40 miles east-west.
