In 1866, a war broke out between Austria and Prussia, the result of which decided the development of European politics for many decades to follow. Saxony joined Austria and sent its army into Bohemia, alongside with the North Austrian Army.

A lot of monuments were erected on the various battlefields around the Czech Republic to remember the troops who fell in the Austro-Prussian War of 1866.

This is the place where the fiercest struggle of the battle by Ceská Skalice took place on June 28, 1866. It was around noon on that day, when major general Gustav Fragnern's brigade launched a successful attack on the marching Prussian infantry of the 5th army corps. However, when the brigade reached the railway, it found itself in the middle of crossfire. Hundreds of dead and gravely injured soldiers were scattered on the battlefield, the commanding officer Fragnern was also killed in action. The four-pound artillery battery no. l/IX assigned to Fragner's brigade was afflicted by the same terrible fate.
