"The Pescaia di San Niccolò was constructed with various functions. First ensured the inaccessibility of the river upstream from enemy ships (while downstream the Pescaia di Santa Rosa was used for this purpose), continuing ideally the walls between the tower of the Old Mint and the tower of St. Nicholas. It contained also a hidden passage that although today flooded and impassable, connected in a "secret" the two sides. In addition, the weir regulated the water level, ensuring many mills in the area, the pullers, the factories of the tanners and dyers and machinery of the Mint a water supply sufficient and constant in time.
Even today accomplishes tasks such as control of water and their oxygenation to the river fauna."
