In 1750s Ireland the father of Redmond Barry is killed in a duel. Barry is brought up by his devoted mother. As a teenager he falls in love with his cousin, Nora Brady. Nora drops Barry in favour a rich English Captain, John Quin. Barry challenges Quin to a duel and kills him. Barry flees to Dublin, but is robbed on the way.

Being broke, Barry enlists in the British army. There he meets a family friend, Captain Grogan, who tells Barry that he did not kill Quin, and that the duel was a plot by Nora’s family to get him out of the way. The regiment is sent to Germany and Grogan is killed in action. Barry deserts, but is captured by the Prussians and is forced to enlist. In an act of gallantry Barry saves the life of Captain Potzdorf and receives a commendation from Frederick the Great.

After the war ends Barry, under the orders of the Ministry of Police, becomes the servant of Chevalier de Balibari, a professional gambler. The Ministry suspect Chevalier is a spy. Barry tells Chevalier of his identity and they become partners as card cheats.

One of the people they cheat is the Prince of Tubingen which leads to a deportation order for Chevalier. Barry takes Chevalier’s place and is deported. He rejoins Chevalier and they cheat their way across Europe. When debts aren’t paid Barry forces the issue with duels. Eventually Barry tires of the life and takes up with the wealthy Countess Lyndon. Her marries her after the death of Sir Charles Lyndon.

Barry takes the Lyndon name and settles in England. Lord Bullingdon, Lady Lyndon’s 10 year old son does not like Lyndon and knows that he is only interested in his mother’s money. Lyndon has a son by the countess, Bryan Patrick.

Barry’s mother comes to live on the estate and warns Lyndon that if the Countess were to die her money would go to Bullingdon, and then he would be penniless. To counteract this his mother encourages him to obtain a noble title. He spends large amounts of money trying to gain access to high society, but this comes to nought when Bullingdon exposes Lyndon as a fraud.

Lyndon is devoted to Bryan Patrick, but this too ends in tragedy when he is killed in a horse riding accident. Grief stricken Lyndon turns to alcohol, whilst the Countess turns to religion. The Countess attempts suicide. This comes to Bullingdon’s ears and he returns to England. He finds Lyndon in a tavern and challenges him to a duel. Bullingdon wound Lyndon in the leg. At a nearby inn Lyndon has his leg amputated.

Bullingdon takes control of his mother’s estate and grants Lyndon an annuity if he leaves England and annulls his marriage to the Countess. Lyndon, financially ruined accepts.
