This acquarium opened in 1995 in the Victoria & Albert Waterfront (VA Waterfront) in Cape Town. It currently displays 88 species in a variety of exhibits, and their website also hosts a live webcam which is popular.
Exhibits include one that educates on the contrast of marine life between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans and includes a touch pool, and information about the lifeforms that exist in the icy Benguela Current, versus the warm Agulhas Current. An exhibit educates on the coral reefs which are under environmental threat, and another that educates visitors regarding poisonous or venomous animals. One of the most popular exhibits is the ragged-tooth sharks. A facinating acquarium hosts a kelp forest with kelp reaching as tall as trees in a mesmerizing exhibit. An exhibit on whales and whaling is innovative. Children's exhibits are hands-on and engaging, incorporating puppets, encouraging the creation of artwork from recycled materials and a place for resting with refreshments. A full list (with photos) of each species on exhibit is located on the website, and includes reptiles, fresh and salt water fish, amphibians, marine invertebrates, birds, and microscopic life (think plankton).
