"For many years MILL CITY, 51.7 m. (826 alt., 775 pop.), has been a lumber camp. Extensive logging operations are carried on in the vicinity. There is a big sawmill here."
Mill City was founded in 1886 at the site of the Santiam Lumber Company mill. It was formally incorporated in 1947 and now has a population of 1,867 (as of 2012). The city is situated along the North Santiam River, downstream from Detroit Lake. The river serves as the boundary between Marion and Linn counties and most of Mill City is on the south (Linn County) side of the river. Timber remains a significant employer in Mill City, but most residents work in Salem and other Willamette Valley towns.
