Jacob Englehart, a founder and first vice-president of Imperial Oil, built “Glenview” as a wedding gift for his wife Charlotte in 1891. It was an impressive mansion with extensive gardens looking out over Bear Creek. After getting introduced to golf on their Scottish honeymoon, a 9 hole golf course was added to the grounds.
Charlotte died in 1911 and bequeathed Glenview (and the golf course) to the town of Petrolia, to be used as a hospital. Jacob Englehart funded the conversion to a 13 bed hospital and endowed it (with Imperial Oil shares) to ensure continuing financing for the hospital. Over the years renovations and additions have updated the hospital facilities however the boardroom which was the former study, has remained intact as a tribute to Jacob Englehart and his wife Charlotte.
