Hazel M. Werner - Steamboat Springs, CO - Colorado Historical Markers on Waymarking.com

This bronze, life-sized statue is executed in a 'sit-by-me' style. 'Hazie" is seated on a bench reading a book. She is depicted in her older years. She is wearing a typical pantsuit for women of the 1990s. The statue sits on the lawn of the Bud Werner Memorial Library (visit link) The plaque reads:

She filled our lives with love
and will live in our hearts forever

Hazie was mother of three Olympians and
an inspiration to generations of young people.

This sculpture was donated to the library by
The Werner Family and Friends
and the artist, Jack Finney

Sadly, it has been difficult to discover information about her. Though she was mother to three Olympians, very active in Steamboat Springs sports and culture and has a sports award named in her honor, I have not been able to find information about her on the web.

Her Olympian children were Buddy Werner (visit link) , Gladys "Skeeter" Werner (Walker) (visit link) and Loris 'Bugs" Werner (visit link) .

"The Hazie Werner Award for Excellence is presented to a local woman, who has, through, the pursuit of personal goals, achieved a standard of excellence in her field. This award, started in 1989, is named after Hazie Werner, a local legend in the Yampa Valley for her dedication and volunteer work for multiple organizations.
