"The monument memorializes Lincoln’s final visit to Sullivan when a near riot broke out on the square during Lincoln’s senatorial campaign against Stephen Douglas."
Inscription:
"This memorial commemorates the speech given by Abraham Lincoln in Sullivan on September 20, 1858. It was unveiled by the citizens of Moultrie Country on September 21, 1968 during the Illinois Sesquicentennial Year."
The bronze tablet memorial figure of Lincoln is contained in a stone frame, publicly accessible outside. According to "Lincoln in Illinois" (Schramm & Hart, 2009) the sculptor was Fred Ben Watkins.
