As the plaque reads:

Big Bear

Big Bear, a principle chief of the Cree Indians, roamed a vast area South to the Cypress Hills and the Missouri until 1883. His followers perpetrated the Frog Lake Massacre and destroyed Fort Pitt. Pursued to Loon Lake by the Militia, Big Bear eventually surrendered near Carlton, July 2 1885. Imprisoned he was released in 1887 and died on Little Pine Reserve January 17, 1888.
