Line U4 of the Vienna Metro transports passangers between Heiligenstadt and Hütteldorf, from north to south along the Donaukanal, the Danube Canal, and then to east along the Wienfluss, the Vienna River. The first half to Karlsplatz mainly runs in tunnel, the rest mostly on the surface. Construction work on the first line, called Stadtbahn, started in 1894, the first section was opened in 1898. The line was closed in 1918, and re-opened as a WD line in 1926. Ongoing renovation followed, and the first section of the modern metro line was completed in 1976, the rest of today’s line – the total of 10.3 miles – was finished in 1981. Travel time is 29 minutes, and there are 18 stations in between: Spittelau, Friedensbrücke, Roßauer Lände, Schottenring, Schwedenplatz, Landstraße, Stadtpark, Karlsplatz, Kettenbrückengasse, Pilgramgasse, Margaretengürtel, Längenfeldgasse, Meidling Hauptstraße, Schönbrunn, Hietzing, Braunschweiggasse, Unter St Veit, Ober St Veit.
Schönbrunn is the fourteenth stop from the northern end of the Viennese U4 metro line, the green line, going along the Donaukanal and Wienfluss. The station was opened in 1898. The palace and the surrounding area received its name from a fountain, the beautiful spring, discovered in 1619. The Hietzing station provides better access to the palace itself.
