Preserve our Heritage
River Street is part of the old Carlton-la Corne trail. It consisted of two mile sections that met two miles east of here at Captain Moore's mill. The trail first linked the James Isbister settlement of 1862 which was two miles west with the trading at Fort Carlton and the post and Anglican Mission at la Corne. After Rev. James Nisbet established a Presbyterian mission opened near here in 1866 settlers were attracted to this area. In 1876 Captain Moore opened the first steam grist and lumber mill in the North-West Territories which then became the terminus for all trails leading to Prince Albert. For Years the trail remained the main street and as the settlement grew to town and then to city, other streets spread out from it.
