During the Industrial Revolution Bradford had grown rapidly as a major woollen manufacturing town and became known as the wool capital of the world.
One area of the town now known as Little Germany attracted Jewish merchants from Germany who built many warehouses that concentrated on dealing with higher quality goods.
This building known as Schiller-Verein, formerly Unity Hall in Rawson Square, Bradford was leased from 1862 as a drinking and social club for these German Merchants. In 1867 the building was converted to a Masonic Hall and was home to a number of lodges until 1910.
There were a number of such ‘Verein’ (institutes) throughout the UK and in this case it was named after Friederich Von Schiller.
The first Schiller institute was founded at a conference in Wiesbaden, Germany, in 1884 by Helga Zepp-LaRouche, the German-born wife of American political activist Lyndon LaRouche. Its stated aim is to seek to apply the ideas of poet, dramatist and philosopher Friedrich Schiller to the current global political situation.
