In Springfield, at the Oak Ridge Cemetery, are a series of war memorials, including one for World War II. Within the design of that memorial are engraved stone bricks of veterans in the war.
The memorial is located in the southwest corner of the cemetery. Enter in the gate from IL Route 29 and drive a short distance to the memorials. The World War II memorial is the one with a large, white globe of the earth in the design.
The stones are in a walking space within the memorial. There are several sizes. The smallest bricks have three lines on them containing their name, the military branch that they served, and the dates of service. There is also a serial number that can be used to look up the person in an online database. Other bricks may contain logos and other information in addition. Bricks can be veterans or sponsors. Among the bricks is a large bronze plaque that has the credits for the memorial - the date of dedication was December 4, 2004.
Its hard to estimate how many bricks there are. The web site listed 195 stories, broken down by branch of service, so 200 is entered below. They are still accepting bricks so the number will increase.
The database - link - (

There are five options. The first option is a 4 x 8 inch brick with room enough for three lines. Other options range from $500 to $5000.
