Ferry House used to be a hotel. The publican used to be the ferry manager, employing operators to propel the ferry across and take fares. When steam engines became small and compact in late 1800's, one was fitted and run on coal, until 1950's. When the operator, The County Council by now, realised the fuel bill could be reduced to 10% of original, by fitting a diesel engine. The ferry carries up to 20 cars and is dragged between two metal cables. Still using diesel and operated by SLDC for County Council as a 'moveable bridge'.
It is not known whether the postal collection uses the ferry.
