"LYONS, 59.3 m. (661 alt., 100 pop.), is a farmers' post office and supply point among undulating green hills." -Oregon: End of the Trail, 1940
Now 70 years after publication of the guide, the town of Lyons, population 1,161 (as of 2010), is more than 11 times as large and is among the fastest growing towns in Linn County. The town was founded by James C. and Henry Lyons, two Irish brothers who settled here around 1880. Captain James Lyons was a retired military man having served with the Union Army in the Civil War and in numerous Indian Wars. The town officially incorporated in 1958. The town's major industries in the early years included timber and the railroad. Today, timber is still a key economic base.
