«La Légion royale canadienne a dédié ce monument aux victimes et aux anciens combattants de la Première et de la Seconde Guerres mondiales originaires de la localité. Source : Ken Annett, Spec, 26 octobre 1997. Plus de 5 000 personnes ont assisté à l’inauguration du monument aux morts de Gaspé par le général Watson, le 7 juillet 1921. Les célébrations ont débuté par une cérémonie religieuse, après laquelle les dignitaires ont défilé en compagnie d’une garde d’honneur et de la musique de la R.C.G.A., venue de Québec pour l’occasion. Le major-général sir David Watson a ensuite fait l’inspection de la garde, qui présentait une belle apparence militaire et a été acclamée par la foule. Le maire A.D. Valpy a ensuite prononcé un discours de bienvenue, suivi d’une allocution de Mme Calhoun, la présidente du comité du monument aux morts, composé de six dames, qui s’est occupé de toute l’organisation et des détails de la cérémonie. Dans son allocution, Mme Calhoun a déclaré : « Nous avons eu nos difficultés et nos moments de découragement, ce qui était inévitable, mais la loyauté des membres du comité et le soutien généreux que nous a accordé la population nous ont permis de surmonter ces obstacles et de mener notre oeuvre à bien. » L’hon. Frank Carrell, M.C.L., M. Auguste Sirois, M. Pinault, M. J. Leonard Apedaile, le rév. chanoine Wayman et d’autres ont également prononcé des discours éloquents. La statue qui coiffe le monument aux morts de Gaspé, et qui représente un jeune soldat canadien, a été réalisée par le sculpteur Emmanual Hahn.»

"Erected by the Royal Canadian Legion, this memorial is dedicated to the local war dead and veterans of the First and Second World Wars. Source: Ken Annett, Spec, October 26, 1997. More than 5,000 people witnessed the unveiling of the Gaspe War Memorial by Gen. Watson on July 7th, 1921. The celebrations opened with Church Services which were followed by a March Past of the officials accompanied by a Guard of Honour and the R.C.G.A. Band which came from Quebec for the occasion. Major General Sir David Watson then reviewed the Guard who presented a fine soldierly appearance and were cheered by the assembled people. An address of Welcome was delivered by Mayor A.D. Valpy which was followed by an address by Mrs. Calhoun, President of the Ladies War Memorial Committee of six ladies who carried out the full organization and all the details of the function. In her speech, Mrs. Calhoun said: “We have had our difficulties and discouragements, as was inevitable, but the loyalty of the members of the Committee together with the generous support accorded to us by the public has made it possible for us to overcome these and bring our work to a successful conclusion.” Eloquent speeches were also delivered by the Hon. Frank Carrell, M.L.C., M. Auguste Sirois, M. Pinault, Mr. J. Leonard Apedaile, Rev. Canon Wayman and others. The sculptor of the figure of a young Canadian soldier that surmounts the Gaspe War Memorial was Emmanual Hahn."

Le monument, tout en granit, mesure environ 10 pieds de haut et 6 pieds de large. La sculpture d’un soldat repose sur un socle en granit gris. Le soldat a la tête baissé. Il est habillé d’un uniforme militaire et tient son fusil tout en posant sa main sur la croix. Les mots : « In Flanders Field « sont gravés sur le monument. Les noms de ceux qui sont morts sont inscrits sur le monument et sur une plaque située a l’arrière de celui-ci. Le site exceptionnel est accessible à tous. Ce monument rend hommage de façon très respectueuse aux Gaspésiens qui ont combattu et sont morts pour sauvegarder la liberté. Ils étaient tous très courageux et méritent qu’on s'en souviennent pour toujours. The cenotaph is located near the Bay of Gaspé in a park built by the municipality of the same name. The granite monument is approximately 10 feet tall and 6 feet wide. The sculpture of a soldier rests on a base of gray granite. The soldier's head is lowered. He is dressed in a military uniform and holds his rifle with one hand while the other rests on the cross. The words "In Flanders Fields" are engraved on the monument. The names of those who died are engraved on the monument and listed on a plaque on the opposite side. The exceptional site is accessible to all. The monument very respectfully pays tribute to the Gaspesians who fought and died to preserve freedom. They were all very brave and deserve to be remembered forever.
