Charles Denby was originally from Virginia and finally settled down in Evansville. He became a state Representative from Vanderburgh County in 1856, just 3 years after moving to Indiana.

With the Civil War starting in 1861, Denby began his own volunteer soldier company to protect the gun powder production locally. He was named Lieutenant Colonel of the 42nd Indiana Infantry and a year later was named Colonel 80th Indiana Infantry.

After retiring from the military, Denby served under Presidents Cleveland, B Harrison, and McKinley as a diplomat for the United States to China.
