This small vehicle allowed one or two people to move about railroad trackage quickly without having to wait on an available train or without tying up major pieces of equipment to tackle relatively light jobs. It was powered by one person using a motion similar to rowing where power was supplied by both arm and leg muscles. Whole most velocipedes had a seat for a second person to ride, this unit has had the rear seat converted into a rack that could hold a box containing tools or other light items.
