Die Frankenwaldbahn ist eine elektrifizierte, zweigleisige Hauptbahn der Spurweite 1435 mm (Normalspur) von Hochstadt-Marktzeuln bei Lichtenfels über Kronach bis Probstzella. Im Kursbuch der Deutschen Bahn als Kursbuchstrecke 840 Lichtenfels–Kronach–Saalfeld aufgeführt, ist sie Teil der Hauptstrecke München – Nürnberg – Jena – Halle/Leipzig – Berlin.
Die Frankenwaldbahn zweigt in Hochstadt-Marktzeuln von der Ludwig-Süd-Nord-Bahn ab. Mit zwei Steilrampen von Pressig-Rothenkirchen und Probstzella nach Steinbach am Wald überwindet die Strecke die Höhenzüge des Frankenwaldes. Die Rampen haben maximale Steigungen von 29 ‰, die Strecke gilt damit zusammen mit der Schwarzwaldbahn als einzige zweigleisige Gebirgsbahn in Deutschland.
Für schwere Güterzüge wird ab hier in Richtung Norden bis zum Scheitelpunkt nachgeschoben!
The Franconian Forest Railway is an electrified, double-track main line of the 1435 mm gauge (standard gauge) of Hochstadt-Marktzeuln in Lichtenfels about Kronach to Probstzella.
