Midsomer Mallow is hoping to win the Perfect Village competition and Judgement Day approaches. Unfortunately for the village, Frank Mannion, petty thief and womaniser, is found stabbed to death with a pitch fork. His body is found in a derelict farm. Whilst Barnaby is at the farm he notices the local Butcher’s van pass by. Barnaby knows that some local thefts were perpetrated using the local butchers van and he goes to talk to Ray Dorset, the butcher.

Ray Dorset’s son, Jack, confesses to committing robberies with Mannion. Ray Dorset was seen in his van near the farm, on his way back from his deliveries. On his outward journey he had seen the car of the De Vere family at the farm. Barnaby goes to see Marcus De Vere, who admits that he was at the farm, but didn’t see Mannion. Mannion had been sleeping with the De Vere daughter.

Other suspects to the murder are the local vet, whose wife was having a fling with Mannion, and Edward Allardice, whose house had been robbed by Mannion. Before Barnaby solves the case, the judges arrive for the competition judgement. Mrs De Vere is in charge of the home made wine and leaves the meeting with the judges, saying she has seen someone behaving oddly at the wine stall. One of the judges, Samantha Johnstone says that she recognises someone, but doesn’t say who. When the judges retire to the refreshment tent, the head judge collapses and dies after drinking some red wine. Shortly after Mrs De Vere also collapses, but survives. The head judge has been poisoned by cyanide.

Barnaby doesn’t think the head judge was the intended target, but Samantha Johnstone. He finds that she was treated at a secure mental clinic and he goes to interview the head psychiatrist. There he finds that Samantha had been treated there and she had been befriended by Annabella, a fellow inmate who had been a child killer. It is a short step for Barnaby to deduce that Bella De Vere is in fact Annabella and the murderer. Before Barnaby can get back to Samantha, she is found murdered in her hotel bedroom. Bella De Vere had killed Mannion because of his affair with her daughter, and killed the head judge and then Samantha to keep her past hidden. By the time Barnaby arrives at the De Vere household Mr De Vere has killed his wife so that she can escape justice.
