Two members of a local fishing club are found bludgeoned to death by the river. One of the victims is Isobel Hewitt, a woman with a zest for life and a retired rally driver. The other victim is Dr Duncan Goff, the local doctor and ladies man.

Whilst Isobel had a taste for the finer things in life, she no longer had the financial means. Her nephew had already bought her house from her and she was borrowing money from a local antiques dealer, Quentin Roka. Isobel had also upset Margaret Seagrove, a local angler, who accused Isobel of leaving fishing lines and lures in the hedgerows. The angling club was worried that the local landowner might evict them if he saw the discarded lines on his annual inspection. Duncan Goff, on the other hand was having affairs all over the place, but without his wife’s knowledge. One of his conquests had been Ruth Scholey, the proprietor of a local restaurant. Her husband Keith had only recently heard about the affair and had just told Dr Goff’s wife.

Keith Scholey had an alibi for the time of the murders, as supplied by hos wife Ruth. However, at Isobel’s funeral she confides to Quentin Roka that she may be mistaken about the timing of her alibi. She later confesses to Barnaby that her alibi might be flaky. Barnaby goes to see Keith Roka, but finds him dead, locked inside his freezer at the restaurant. The door had been jammed so that Scholey could not get out of the freezer. Troy comes to the opinion that Scholey had wanted to lock himself in the freezer and then ring for help. Unfortunately he could not get a signal once the door was shut. Barnaby is only partially convinced, particularly as the freezer light was off.

Barnaby suddenly realises that Troy is only half right. Scholey may have tried to stage his false imprisonment, but that a second party had jammed the door afterwards. He works out that Quentin Roka had once had a restaurant and would have known how freezer door locks work. He was also aware that Scholey’s alibi was about to be blown for the first two murders. Quentin Roka killed Isobel because he had found the deeds for her house whilst helping Isobel look for some share certificates, and hadn’t realised Isobel was broke. Dr Goff came across the murder scene and he had to be killed.
