This model of Jeep was initially designed in the early 1940s and was a compromise between competing designs from the Willys-Overland Corporation and the Ford Motor Company. It was produced in this general configuration into the 1950s. It was intended to be a general-purpose or GP vehicle, hence the nickname Jeep.
