The Place: Also known as Salem Municipal Airport, McNary Field dates to the 1930s. It features two grooved asphalt runways in an "x-pattern" with lengths of 5,811 and 5,145 feet. Most flights are general aviation however delivery carriers also operate here as well as Oregon Air National Guard flights. The field was named for Charles L. McNary, the longtime U.S. Senator from Oregon.
The Person: Charles L. McNary (1874-1944) represented Oregon as a U.S. Senator from 1917 to 1944. A Republican, from 1933-1944 he was the Senate Minority Leader and was the party's Vice Presidential candidate on the ticket with Wendell Wilkie in 1940. A native of Salem, after his death in 1944 the Salem City Council renamed the airport in his honor.
