We had tried several times to catch the firehouse open, and on Friday it finally happened. This truck, though not our primary target, was a nice bonus.

This Mercury M6, though never restored, is in pretty fair shape as yet. It was bought new by the Castlegar Fire Department and has always been in their employ. The Conversion was done by LaFrance. We're not sure when it was retired from active duty.

Though it can trace its roots back as far as 1832, the American LaFrance Fire Engine Company was formed in 1903 in Elmira, NY. LaFrance also had a Canadian manufacturing plant in Toronto, ON, under the name Lafrance-Foamite, which operated until 1971. This Merc Pumper, then, would have been built in Toronto.
