The Oban Distillery was established in 1794. It consists of an extensive range of buildings between Stafford Street and George Street including an office building to the east end of Stafford Street with warehouses to the south and east and a courtyard at the north-east corner of the site. There are Old Malt Barns, an Old Malt Kiln several Disused Warehouses, two Duty Free Warehouses, a Mash House, a Tun Room, a Boiler House, the Still House, and the Filling Store.
To the east of the site is the Mill Room with the brick addition at its eastern end containing the Boiler House and oil and soda tanks. Adjacent to the Boiler House is this tall red brick chimney painted red with a black top, and reinforced with metal bands around it at approximately 2ft (60cm) spacing. The top of the chimney has taken various forms over the years from plain tapered to having a flared top to the form we see today, slightly bulbous.
