Although Mesquite was originally settled in 1880 by Mormon Pioneers it did not incorporate until 1984. The slogan "From Persistence to Prosperity" refers to the fact that is took three tries to finally establish a permanent settlement, the first two being lost to floods, and the relatively recent economic boost created by several casinos being established in the rapidly growing town.
