In Lincoln, by the Postville Courthouse, is a hand operated water pump across the street.

The pump is located west of the present center of Lincoln, at the corner of 5th Street and S. Madison Street, in front of a VFW hall. There is also a sign next to the pump. Pertinent text on that sign is as follows:

"Judge Davis and Lincoln at Deskins Inn

...

The existing well on this property dates from early 1830s and was used by Abraham Lincoln and others during the time court was being held at the Postville Courthouse."

The pump was in good condition, though I didn't test to see if it still pumped, though I believe the handle was secured. There was a well cover to the east about 20 ft on the other side of the sign. The pump was made by the Baker Mfg Co. of Evansville, Wisconsin.

So, touch the handle and know that Lincoln likely touched the handle before you.
