Camp Halleck (later Fort Halleck) was a remote US Army outpost established at great expense to protect travelers on the California Trail and then the construction work on the Central Pacific Railroad. Since the railroad passed no closer that 11 miles from the railroad, a shipping point at the railroad itself was needed to receive supplies destined for the fort. The town of Halleck was also a supply point for neighboring ranchers and farmers and became the local social center. The fort was abandoned in 1886 but the town continued to thrive reaching a peak population of around 125 residents in 1900. As area ranches were bought up and consolidated into corporate operations the town began its economic decline lasting as a viable entity into the 1950s. The small post office lasted even longer but eventually could not justify its existence.

Today, a single occupied residence remains along with the old post office which is kept in the same condition as when it closed. A sign alongside Nevada Highway 229 still marks the site of this ghost town.

Reason for Abandonment: Economic

Date Abandoned: 01/01/1955
